Welcome

The u3a Gardening Group is a welcoming and sociable community for anyone with an interest in gardening, from caring for a simple window box to managing a flourishing allotment, and everything in between. Our members enjoy sharing experiences, exchanging practical tips, discussing challenges, and encouraging one another in the ongoing adventure of “making your garden grow.”

We meet monthly on the third Monday of each month from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Methodist Church, Sandy Lane, Melton Mowbray. Meetings combine relaxed and open discussion with opportunities to learn from visiting speakers and occasional online presentations covering a wide range of gardening topics.

In addition to our regular meetings, we organise group visits throughout the year to gardens and venues offering guided tours and talks. Members also occasionally open their own gardens to the group, providing inspiration, ideas, and the chance to celebrate personal achievements together.

Gardening is a lifelong learning experience, shaped by factors such as weather, soil conditions, plant varieties, and cultivation methods. Whatever your level of experience, there is always something new to discover, and our group values curiosity, shared knowledge, and mutual support.

We warmly welcome new members and encourage fresh ideas, suggestions for future topics, and recommendations for visits and events that reflect our shared enjoyment of amateur gardening.

Members Days Out & Experiences

A small but enthusiastic group made the journey over to Floral Media for what proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable and enriching day out. Although the weather remained dry, a biting wind ensured our coats stayed firmly wrapped around us as we explored this remarkable venue tucked away in rural Nottinghamshire.

Our visit began with a warm welcome from Steven and Paula Routledge, the husband‑and‑wife team behind Floral Media. Their story is as inspiring as their surroundings. Over the past 30 years, they have built an exceptional reputation across horticulture, floristry and events, and their passion is evident in every corner of their 15‑acre site. Paula’s impressive credentials - RHS judge, Chelsea Flower Show medallist, NAFAS North Midlands Demonstrator and BBC Radio Nottingham gardening broadcaster added real depth to the talk and demonstration she delivered for us.

The gardens themselves have been lovingly developed over the last two decades, featuring wildflower meadows, sculptures, and their newest venture: the Field of Dreams Flower Farm, which supplies local florists and farm shops and offers DIY flower buckets. Despite not being open to the general public, Floral Media hosts a varied programme of horticultural and floristry workshops, along with two types of exclusive group visit packages - a real privilege to experience.

Following an informative talk, an engaging floral demonstration and a scrumptious lunch, we enjoyed a little plant shopping before fitting in a cheeky visit to nearby Norwell Nurseries https://www.norwellnurseries.co.uk/ for a quick wander and a small purchase or two. It was the perfect way to round off the afternoon before returning to home.

This was a delightful visit from start to finish, educational, welcoming, beautifully presented and full of inspiration. We would wholeheartedly recommend Floral Media to any group seeking a memorable day out in a unique and expertly run setting.

Yesterday, one of our members enjoyed a wonderful visit to Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, including the excellent Head Gardener Tour. Built in the 1860s to the height of Victorian luxury, the house remained in the same family for over 120 years and has been carefully preserved as a fascinating “country house frozen in time” following the last owner’s death in 1988.

The beautifully restored gardens were a real highlight, showcasing colourful seasonal displays and a variety of grand Victorian-style gardens in miniature. The site is very accessible, with mainly tarmac paths and well-maintained gravel routes through the Quarry Gardens. A full visit takes around three hours, with the guided garden tour lasting approximately one hour.

With discounted group rates, concessionary pricing for over 65s, and participation in the Essential Companion Scheme, the visit offers excellent value at under £20 per person. The tour and gardens were described as brilliant and well worth a future visit.
